Documentation - Whitelists/SpamTraps

Counteragent features whitelisting capabilities based upon Sender Address, Recipient Address, and Sender IP as well as a list of SpamTrap addresses to help combat spam. You can specify if a whitelisted email is exempt from virus scanning and/or spam scanning. The SpamTraps list allows you to list SpamTrap addresses. SpamTrap addresses might be addresses that are planted in web pages for spammer harvesting and any email received at these addresses is known to be spam.

Whitelists and the SpamTraps list are stored in the 'Counteragent 2:Counteragent Files:Lists' folder. The lists are named Whitelist-IPs, Whitelist-Recipients, Whitelist-Senders, and SpamTraps. Changes to the lists are automatically detected by Counteragent and the lists are reloaded when there has been a change. They can be edited by a text editor - we recommend BBEdit or TextWrangler.

Whitelist-IPs
This list allows you to whitelist IP addresses that should be exempt from scanning. Blank lines and lines that begin with "#" are ignored. A wildcard character "*" can be used in the IP address. One entry should be on each line. The first part of the line should be the IP address, followed by a Tab character, optionally followed by what the IP is exempt from (ALL/VIRUS/SPAM). Leaving off the last part of the line defaults the entry to ALL.

Examples: (<tab> should be replaced with an actual tab)
127.0.0.1<tab>SPAM
192.168.0.*
127.0.0.1<tab>VIRUS

Whitelist-Senders
This list allows you to whitelist sender addresses that should be exempt from scanning. Blank lines and lines that begin with "#" are ignored. A wildcard character "*" can be used in the sender's email address. One entry should be on each line. The first part of the line should be the email address, followed by a Tab character, optionally followed by what the sender address is exempt from (ALL/VIRUS/SPAM). Leaving off the last part of the line defaults the entry to ALL.

Examples: (<tab> should be replaced with an actual tab)
*@spamcop.net<tab>SPAM
*@eudora.co.nz<tab>SPAM
postmaster@counteragent.net

Whitelist-Recipients
This list allows you to whitelist recipient addresses that should be exempt from scanning. Blank lines and lines that begin with "#" are ignored. A wildcard character "*" can be used in the recipient's email address. One entry should be on each line. The first part of the line should be the email address, followed by a Tab character, optionally followed by what the recipient address is exempt from (ALL/VIRUS/SPAM). Leaving off the last part of the line defaults the entry to ALL. You might want to whitelist all of your "abuse@" addresses so that users can report spam that may have originated from your server.

Examples: (<tab> should be replaced with an actual tab)
abuse@*<tab>SPAM
postmaster@*<tab>ALL

SpamTraps
This list allows you to specify SpamTrap addresses, mail to which is automatically deemed to be spam. Blank lines and lines that begin with "#" are ignored. A wildcard character "*" can be used in the SpamTrap email address. One entry should be on each line.

Examples:
spamtrap@*
die_spammer_scum@counteragent.net

Email to SpamTraps is automatically learned by SpamAssassin as spam.
