Documentation - Installation

Installing SpamAssassin, ClamAV, and Counteragent 2

Even if you are running OS X Server, you should follow these directions because OS X Server includes a very outdated version of SpamAssassin and Counteragent needs at least version 3.1 of SpamAssassin. The current version of SpamAssassin is 3.1.4 and OS X Server only comes with 3.0.1.

Because virus and content filtering is extremely processor intensive, the minimum suggested system requirements to run Counteragent 2 is OS 10.4.x running on at least a 1 GHz G4 with 1 GB of RAM. Faster PPC Macs and Intel Macs work fine. Counteragent 2 'may' run on slower systems or under OS 10.3.9, but we do not support Counteragent 2 running on those systems.

On the Disk Image you downloaded, you will find separate installers for PowerPC and Intel Macs. Double-click the correct installer and enter your administrator password if prompted.

You will also find an EIMS filter called Counteragent2 Filter. Drag this to the EIMS Filters folder. If you have the zzCounteragent Filter in your Filters folder, you may remove it. You may want to rename this filter so it is alphabetically last.

Drag the Counteragent 2 folder from the disk image into your Applications folder.

You must turn off Spotlight indexing of Counteragent's application folder. To do this, open the Spotlight System Preference and drag the whole Counteragent 2 folder onto the Privacy pane.

Quit and restart EIMS, then launch Counteragent 2.

>>> Once EIMS starts receiving mail after being relaunched, you will see 'Message Discarded' entries in the EIMS console. Do NOT panic. This is simply EIMS' way of saying that it is done with a message and saved it to a message file. This message file is what Counteragent then picks up and scans and then returns to EIMS for delivery.
